Any ideas why I get these? They mess up my unread count too... I think it's a bug in iOS4.

Try using the task manager to close the mail app (press and hold the mail icon 'til it shakes and has a red minus sign... hit minus sign to close). Maybe kill some other apps too if you have a bunch open; then reopen mail.... this worked for me.
Yeah, I've just started getting these too on iOS4. Annoyingly you can't delete them - very odd. Incidentally mine are from 1970 - are Apple using some incredible new wormhole technology to reduce power consumption perhaps?
